Markets in Chiang Mai

Not surprisingly, with Chiang Mai being Thailand's major center for quality handicrafts, you will find quite a few markets here where some excellent bargains can be made. The most well-known markets are the Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road; Saturday Market on Wualai Road; Sunday Market on Ratchadamnoen Road and Warorot Market by the Ping River.

Night Bazaar

The Night Bazaar is the largest and most famous tourist market in Chiang Mai. It is located on Chang Klan Road between Thapae Road and Sri Donchai Road. Everything is available here including souvenirs, handicrafts, clothing and shoes, jewelry, watches, music and DVDs. The shopping starts around 6 pm and slows down around 11 pm, while some of the shops and stalls are open all day.

Saturday Market

Saturday Market is held on Saturday evenings on Wualai Road, the old silver-making district, just outside Chiang Mai Gate. Here you will find silver and lacquerware as well as many other local handicrafts. There are plenty of food and drink vendors along the street. The Saturday Market is smaller and less busy than the Sunday Market. The market opens in the late afternoon and stays open until around 10.30 pm.

Sunday Market

The Sunday Market on Ratchadamnoen Road begins at Thapae Gate and ends at the city police station about 6 blocks west. The road is blocked of from traffic from around 3 pm and the sidewalks are filled with vendors selling all kinds of local handicraft. At the temple grounds along this road food stalls are set up and you can enjoy real northern Thai food. There is also a stage where Thai musicians and dancers in traditional costumes give performances.

Warorot Market

Warorot Market, locally called Kad Luang, is one of Chiang Mai’s largest markets and a place to see the real Chiang Mai. It is located in Chinatown north of Nawarat Bridge and west of the Ping River between Thapae Road and Chang Moi Road. This sprawling market is where the locals shop, and is well worth a visit. Here you’ll find clothes, fabrics, northern style food, herbs and spices. It also includes a flower market and many stands selling fresh fruit.
